Na Keiki o Ke Kai

Children of the Sea

Na Keiki o Ke Kai embodies Makoa Quest's mission to empower the future generations of Maui through culturally-immersive education and ecological stewardship. This community-based program nurtures the next generation of environmental stewards by connecting our keiki to the land, sea, and the ancestral wisdom that has sustained these islands for centuries.

Through hands-on learning in Hawaiian culture, ocean safety, and ecological awareness, we bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and contemporary conservation, creating a regenerative approach to youth development that honors both our past and our future.

Na Keiki o Ke Kai was born in 2020 during a time of unprecedented challenge, when most summer programs had closed and families were seeking meaningful ways to reconnect their children with community and culture. What began as a parent-led response to keep keiki outside, learning and growing together, has blossomed into a cherished annual tradition.

Now in its fifth year and first year in partnership with Makoa Quest, this completely volunteer-run program continues to be driven by parents who understand that our children are not just the future—they are the present guardians of our island home.

Our Story

"Rooted in Hawaiian culture is the ancient understanding that our children are the key to the longevity of traditional life ways, stewardship, and community."

What We Do

This program helps our keiki learn about the islands—from the sea (makai) to the mountains (mauka).

They learn about paddling canoe (wa'a), community and working together (lokahi).

We're cultivating a deeper relationship between children and their environment, fostering an awareness of the intricate connections that bind us all to this place.

Ocean Connection

Swimming, ocean safety, paddling outrigger canoe, understanding tides and currents, and becoming comfortable in open water

Hawaiian Culture

Hula, oli (chanting), Hawaiian language through traditional games, and learning about Hawaiian history and moon phases

Marine Stewardship

Learning about fishponds, ocean life, weekly beach cleanups, and caring for our coastal ecosystems

Water Sports

Experienced instruction in surfing and stand-up paddleboarding to build confidence and skills

What Makes Us Unique

Unlike traditional drop-off programs, parents have the opportunity to get in the canoe with their child, enter the ocean alongside them, and learn the songs and chants together. This intergenerational approach allows parents to demonstrate and embody the values of culture, aloha, and stewardship for their children. Our programs currently serve ages 4-12, with plans to expand to teenagers in the future.

Culture has a way of grounding us. It is what keeps us steady when the world knocks us off our center. By learning together, families build not just skills, but lasting connections to place, tradition, and each other.
